For the third time this season Iowa and Michigan State matched up and played another Big Ten basketball game. Except this game was in the first round on the Big Ten tournament and much closer than the first two. In a game where Michigan State made every shot when they needed to they won 66-61. This was a must win game for both Iowa and Michigan State. With only 11 wins on the year, Iowa of course needed to win the Big Ten tournament to get into the big dance. Michigan State on the other hand may have just punched their ticket.

It took a while for this game to get into full swing as both teams came out a tad flat.  Once both teams got rid of the first round gitters, Michigan State ran out to a 7-2 lead over the Hawkeyes.  Iowa wasnt going to lay down for the Spartans, they fought back slowly and tied the game at 24 with 5:18 seconds remaining. At this point Iowa had several opportunities to take the lead for the first time but never could. They either missed free throws or Michigan State hit shots when need be. Iowa tied the game again at 28 and 31 but played from behind the whole half. Michigan State went into the locker room with a 33-31 halftime lead. (more…)

The Michigan State Spartans and the Iowa  Hawkeye’s will match up for the third time this season in the first round of the Big Ten tournament at Conseco Field house  on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 pm ET.

Michigan State enters the tournament as a seven seed and the Hawkeyes will get the tenth seed. The first time these two teams played was back on February 2nd in Iowa City as the Hawkeyes pulled off the upset and won 72-52.  Iowa contributed to Michigan State’s worst stretch of the season as they lost 5 of 6 at one point. Michigan State opened up a can of payback on the Hawkeyes when they dribbled into Iowa City and beat Iowa by 19, 85-66.

By now if you have been following college basketball you have realized that Michigan State isn’t the team that they were supposed to be. I know it may be hard to believe but the Spartans were actually ranked #2 in the country at one point. Michigan State looked like they could make another run to the final four, until January 18th hit at they lost 8 of their final 13 games.  Tom Izzo will never use this as an excuse but the Spartans are a younger team then they have been in the past. It also doesn’t help that they lost Korie Lucious to a suspension until he later transferred to Iowa State. Lucious may have not been contributing to the team on the floor but it’s safe to say he was causing some distraction. (more…)
