In the quarter-final round of the Big Ten Tournament, the phrase “anybody can beat anybody on any given night” occurred. To start off the day, the #1 seed Ohio State barley slipped by they #8 seed Northwestern in overtime. In game 5 of the tournament the 5 seeded Michigan Wolverines upset the 4th seeded Fighting Illini by five. To be completely honest, the 6th game of the Big Ten Tournament shocked me. The 7th seeded Michigan State Spartans beat the #2 seed Purdue handily.

#1 Ohio State vs. #8 Northwestern: At the beginning of each year coaches around the country encourage their team to be playing their best basketball by March 1st. For the #1 ranked team in the country I think they did that. So what does that say about an unranked Northwestern team? No disrespect to the Wildcats because they are a team that is on the rise but “anybody can beat anybody on any given night”.  Now Ohio State won this game but Northwestern played well enough to win. Both teams shot poorly all day but Jared Sullinger prevailed in overtime, shooting 10 for 10 from the charity stripe. Stats don’t lie in most cases, Northwestern is 2-12 when scoring under 70 points this season, the scored 61 to Ohio States 67.  With 18 wins is it good enough for Northwestern to make the big dance? I think so. With Ohio States win tonight they have put up 30 “W’s” this season, this is only the second time that’s happened.

#4 Illinios vs. #5 Michigan John Beilein’s 1,000th win as a head coach couldn’t have come at a bigger time. Tim Hardaway Jr’s three couldn’t have come at a bigger time. In case you’re wondering, Michigan won this game by a score of 60 to 55. Darious Morris scored 8 of his 17 points in the final eight minutes of the game for the Wolverines and Tim Hardaway Jr cashed in a three ball with 1:42 left and gave Michigan a 3 point lead. A lead that would stick for good. Michigan advances and will play their arch rival and #1 seed the Ohio State Buckeyes.

#2 Purdue vs. #7 Michigan State:  Michigan State decided to get hot at just the right time, they are playing their best basketball in month of March, just in time to secure a spot in the Big Ten Tournament. Michigan State spanked Purdue tonight by the score of 74-56. Kalin Lucas scored 30 points tonight and Michigan State has won five of their past seven games. Michigan State could easily find themselves in the Big Ten Championship as they play the 6th seeded Penn State Nittany Lions, and after playing Iowa three times I don’t think Michigan State takes any team litely.

#3 Wisconsin vs. #6 Penn State: Normally a team can’t play a “bad” game against Wisconsin and win but Penn State did, only because Wisconsin played much worse. Normally your football team doesn’t outscore your basketball team, but for Wisconsin that happened. In a game where both teams combined for 69 points the winning team’s leading scorer had 9 points. Penn State won this game 36-33. This may look like a typo but it’s not, the Badgers shot 29.4%, 2-21 from the three-point line and made one free thrown all night.

It was a crazy day in the sports world today, inside and outside the Big Ten Conference, cant wait to see what the Semi final round brings.
